Tired of the skeptics? There are some believers in Cavaliers' draft
Written by Mary Schmitt Boyer(Cleveland.com)

Darnell Jackson, The Cavs' 2nd round pickCavaliers fans weren't overjoyed with the selection of young North Carolina State forward J.J. Hickson with the 19th pick in the NBA draft last week, but two of three national writers gave the team high grades after picking up Hickson and then trading for the rights to Kansas forwards Darnell Jackson and Sasha Kaun.

Chad Ford of ESPN.com gave the Cavs an A minus.

Wrote Ford: "Hickson has been one of my sleepers in the draft. He has an NBA body and great athleticism, and he can play inside and out. His game needs to develop, but the raw tools are impressive. He could be a nice long-term replacement for Joe Smith. At No. 19, he was one of the few players left on the board with a chance of being a great player.

"And according to (ESPN's) John Hollinger's statistical formula, Jackson is one the biggest sleepers in the draft."

The Clock Strikes Midnight, Time For Free Agency

Baron Davis, Could Be A Trade Option For The CavaliersCLEVELAND - Not that the Wine and Gold could make a blockbuster offer to a big name free agent like they did a few years ago when they had the cap space, during the off season when they signed Larry Hughes to a huge contract, and when they gave contracts out to guys like Donyell Marshall, and Damon Jones. Out of those three, only one remains with the Cavs, and sees limited playing time. Its safe to say, Danny Ferry has failed in free agency.

But Ferry has a second chance at life, and by life I mean he can make another trade with the expiring contracts he has, still. Even though the draft has passed, and it seems some options have gone down the drain, but that's not 100 percent true.

Some options have just made it clear that they have opt out of their current contracts with their respected clubs. As of now, Baron Davis, who has had the Cavs' eye, has opt out of his 18 million dollar contract with the Golden State Warriors. Does it make it possible he will land in Cleveland? Actually, now it makes it harder, because the Cavs have no cap space to make a move to sign a big name. But thats not true either, because Baron Davis can re-sign with Golden State if The Cavs and Golden State agree upon a sign-and-trade deal. Of course it'd kill the Cavs in cap, but they'd get an all star point guard to go along side LeBron James.

Seems like a fair deal? Well, lets check the other options, shall we?

Terry Pluto: A lot can happen between now and 2010
Written by Terry Pluto(Cleveland.com)

LeBron JamesIn two years, it's a done deal: LeBron James absolutely, definitely without question will be playing for the New Jersey soon to be Brooklyn Nets. Gotta be, because James is big buds with Nets minority owner Jay-Z.

Wait a minute, he wears a Yankees cap and once said Madison Square Garden was one of his favorite arenas. That settles it. In the summer of 2010, James will be signing with the Knicks.

Listen to the talking heads on TV, most of whom don't believe that James actually likes Northeast Ohio. They can't imagine anyone really wanting to live here. We're Devil's Island, only with worse weather. So James has to leave, because they would leave if they were James.

Some media types insist they've heard "from those close to James" that the Cavs star will head east the moment his contract expires in 2010. They point to how the Knicks and Nets are cleaning up their salary cap situations, creating room to bid for James in 2010.

How about this scoop? James is now hanging around with SpongeBob SquarePants, and the two were spotted chomping crabby patties at the Krusty Krab. He must be ticketed for Bikini Bottom in 2010, not just making a cartoon for kids that stresses the need to exercise.

Terry Pluto's Talkin' Cavs

J.J Hickson, The Cavs' 1st Round PickAbout the Cavs ...

There are considerable efforts at making a trade for someone who can help LeBron James. Forget Michael Redd. By trading for Richard Jefferson, new Milwaukee General Manager John Hammond served notice he wants to win now. He plans to keep Mo Williams, Jefferson and Redd together -- hoping to get the nearly comatose franchise and sleeping fans into the playoffs.

The Cavs will continue to pursue Baron Davis, who has one year and about $18 million left on his contract with Golden State. He can opt out, but really wants an extension. The Warriors do not seem interested, as they appear to be on a rebuilding program with Monta Ellis, Brandon Wright, Andris Biedrins and others -- many under 25. They drafted 19-year-old Anthony Randolph, and supposedly want to deal for a young big man. How about Anderson Varejao and some expiring contracts for Davis? While he played all 82 games, the Cavs have to make sure that his health is OK, as Davis has a history of knee and back problems.

Yes, the Cavs did try to get Jefferson. Apparently, Nets GM Rod Thorn is quite taken with Yi Jianlian, the Chinese big man and No. 1 pick by the Bucks in 2007. He also may be worried that Varejao can become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and his agent (Dan Fegan) can be a very tough negotiator. The combination of Fegan and free agency in 2009 (along with Varejao needing to approve any trade) does complicate matters for the Cavs. A team may have to work out an extension with Varejao before making a deal for him.
